Urban Blazers

I’m waiting for the Phils to finish trampling the Dodgers here in the newsroom, so I have a couple minutes to kill.  (It’s the top of the 8th, 9-3)  I figured I would catch up on emails and I found one from a local guy who has now introduced me to a wonderful organization–

Hi Kerri-Lee,

My inspiration for sending you an email today was seeing you and your family walking into the Wissahickon as I was leaving today…  I didn’t want to bother you while you were with your family but I do want to introduce you to Urban Blazers.  Judging from your choice of locations for a walk on a beautiful fall day and the occasional facebook update I see from you I think you might be interested in what Urban Blazers does. . . We are a non-profit organization that provides young people from under resourced Philadelphia communities with active, outdoor programming.  Our programs consist of different activities including hikes in the Wissahickon and Poconos, canoeing at Tyler State Park, indoor Rock Climbing, Whitewater Rafting, Camping and more.  Our programs focus on helping kids connect with nature in a way that fosters self-confidence, leadership skills and healthy team dynamics; encourages the development of positive mentoring relationships with adult role models; and stimulates interest in science and conservation.

Eric outlined a whole lot more in the rest of his email, so I checked out the website and just felt it was worth sharing.  They are in need, as all non-profits are, of donations and volunteer time, and I just think the mission behind what they are doing was so worth passing on– “growing and learning through nature and fitness.”

Oh– and if you go to the Wissahickon I strongly recommend Tommy Gun’s BBQ.  It’s right across form the Septa bus station.  It’s AWESOME!

I raced home from work this evening hoping to watch the Yankees clinch the pennant, only to watch the Angels jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Which kinda reminded me of the time I was camping in Oct., and the Yankees were in the playoffs, and when I awoke in my tent from my Saturday afternoon nap, I realized Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez was pitching that night and at that time, was undefeated in the postseason, so, after lunch, I threw everything in my car, not bothering to fold my tent or sleeping bag, only to arrive home that night and watch “El Duque” get pounded like the only nail in a carpentry workshop.

Hi All– Watching the 9th inning in Game 4 and the Yanks just pulled ahead 7-4… is this it? The newsroom is awfully quiet right now. I figured I would come visit the blog to distract myself… I can’t handle this!!!!!!
