“Summer and the City”

The ultimate recipe for “to-die-for” popcorn in just a minute, but first:

——————————–

I feel like Carrie Bradshaw writing on a hot steamy summer day while the city around me bakes in the heat.  A Summer Saturday in Philadelphia.  My wilderness trek is behind and there is a big pile of luggage that needs unpacking in my kitchen. Guess what I am doing today.

Just grabbed coffee and helped a flight attendent from Colorado Springs get to the ER because a black lab bit her arm.  She was walking down the street with a sandwich in her hand and the dog apparently just bit her.  She was very sweet, very shaken, but amazingly still kept her sense of humor– she is going to be fine.  Once I knew she was in good hands,  I meekly said, “Welcome to Philly” and she laughed.

You never know what a day will hold.  And it’s barely noon.

Interesting tidbit: Another reason to get your news from FOX 29! We aren’t holding anything, it will be online and on our air immediately.

Philadelphia Inquirer to hold stories for paper

Cory Bergman

That’s right, the Inquirer has sent out a memo to its staff requiring reporters and editors to hold non-breaking stories for the newspaper. “Beginning today, we are adopting an Inquirer first policy for our signature investigative reporting, enterprise, trend stories, news features, and reviews of all sorts,” explains managing editor Mike Leary. “What that means is that we won’t post those stories online until they’re in print.” Leary says that breaking stories will remain first on the web. Earlier this week, there was this story in Editor & Publisher:

“The owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News is facing more debt troubles, according to a Standard & Poors report that says the company has received a forbearance agreement from creditors through Sept. 10.”

Sounds like a big opportunity for the Philly TV stations.

Says Jeff Jarvis: “What the hëll are they thinking in Philadelphia?”

Now it’s Saturday night and that laundry is still leering at me from the kitchen floor.  Sorry vacation bags, you are staying packed until tomorrow, I’m going to ONDemand a movie!

POPCORN

During my adventure vacation, I rediscovered how delicious popcorn is when it’s popped on the stove in oil.  My friend’s mom recently re-introduced me to the concept, and I forgot how tasty it is.  That is the way I grew up eating it since my dad was a MASTER popcorn maker.  He would pop us some while we got into our pj’s then all four of us kids would polish off an entire big bowl before going to bed.

You need:

Cooking oil (careful about using strong tasting olive oil, it gives it a funny taste)

Bag of unpopped popcorn seeds

Salt

Directions:

Pour enough oil into a pot with a handle to coat the bottom, drop in enough seeds to cover the bottom, but not layer on top of each other (it will pop out of the pot) add salt to the oil so it coats the popcorn once it’s popped, then turn the heat to high.  Wait for the oil to heat up, and the popping will start.  Move the pot back and forth so you don’t burn the kernels already popped. When the lid starts to raise, lift the pot with the handle and pour into a bowl….

and enjoy.

Hope you are enjoying the weekend with your friends and family.

And what is going on with the Phla. Inq.. That sounds ridiculous. It’s like watching a football game without being able to see the TOUCHDOWNS until some other form of communication shows it first. Good luck Inq..

Tex 08.10.08 at 8:51 am

The only comment I have on the Inquirer info is kind of an anti-TV news thing (sorry). Many times I’ve seen secondary news stories (that is, those that don’t make the first few pages of the newspaper) appear in the Inquirer, then a day later Fox29 (or another channel) is running the same story as newsworthy. It seems the TV outlets are taking today’s news and reporting it on tomorrows telecasts. Since the Inquirer posts these stories online before they appear in newsprint, its going to slow down the TV news outlets even more.

The Inquirer is clearly struggling to survive and this could serve to somewhat protect their property. While the newspaper is behind “common knowledge” when it comes to major news stories, they are well ahead for minor news.

Be careful, Tex.

The last guy that criticized one of KL’s hats lost his lucky fishing hat and didn’t catch a fish for many moons.

Monday,Monday, La-da-La-da-da-da!

Rich 08.11.08 at 7:16 pm

bobm, thanks. I don’t think I worded it all that well. And I don’t mean to pick on Fox29 in particular. Its true of many TV news outlets, even national. I’m sure a major newspaper has a huge staff, while a Fox29 has a much smaller staff to “find” news. They have to take it where they can get it.
