Heading Home…

Friday

So in a couple of hours I’ll be pulling out of here and heading south, back to the Delaware Valley :)

Spent some time yesterday visiting cottages decorated by some NYC designers.  I loved seeing their “city-take” on cottage living.  One of them (I won’t say who, but he is very well known for his role on a hilarous design show) really did a beautiful job of his lake house, incorporating lodgey features into a stylish lofty bungalow.  I love decorating and design, forgive me for rambling on about this part of the trip, but it was so much fun to tour these beautiful homes and get ideas.

Then, my design tour was cut short by a huge rainstorm– we barely made it back to the car in time.  Thankfully we got our outdoor adventures in before the rain arrived, so it didn’t stop us from biking and swimming.

Earlier, we also visited this campground that made me think I had jumped back in time to the days of Brady Bunch station wagons, A-frame cabins on campgrounds, and marshmallows roasting on sticks over open camp fires.  Surely it had to be 1978!  This was like a time capsule.  Very fun to ssee families having such a good time together.

Off to the world wide web I go to see what news I missed over night…

————————————–

Some snapshots of our last couple days: lots of fun, but I’m ready to return to Philly.  Seriously!

Well, it’s getting tough to come up with outdoorsy activities we have not done, so my week in the sticks must be wrapping up.  Today– a morning bike ride is on tap with Van riding in the back on a bike seat.  He, no doubt, will want to bring his fishing pole and try his luck (he’s had some) at the catch of the day.  He is so used to jumping in lakes, ponds and streams as we encounter them I am not sure what I am going to say when we’re playing on Kelly Drive and he wants to dive into the Schuylkill…

vanaugust32008-202.jpg

Heading off to the news websites now to see what is going on… oh! And congrats to FOX 29, our news director Kingsley Smith, and our GM Mike Renda for getting Emmy Nominations for the 2008 MidAtlantic Natas Awards!

GO TEAM FOX!

More in a bit….

Wednesday

Woke up to a little rain this morning but it’s turned into another great day.  Today is exercise/outdoor day… hardcore.  Van and I are going biking right now.  Then we have a hike to a beautiful spot planned.  Then later, we will head off to get an ice cream cone in town, and take in a late afternoon swim in one of the nearby streams.  It’s easy living and I am going to come back so refreshed… I guess that’s what the lazy days of summer vacation are all about.

————————————

We saw this deep river pool while we were biking past, so we stopped for an impromptu cool off, then posed in a meadow

Here’s a fish like the one Van caught (proudest moment ever)

So far it looks like a fairly quiet news day in Philly… glad to see it, hope the bad news takes a day off.

Tuesday

I’ve just been busy getting back to nature, becoming “one” with my inner Girl Scout, and having a blast in the process.  This picture is of Van and a couple of dogs.  He is addicted to hanging out at lakes and creeks and there isn’t a sign of city boy left in him this week.

We are in rugged country, enjoying small town living, where there are rustic and beautiful sites everywhere you look– I am loving it, and loving watching the people around me enjoy a slower pace.  Getting around on their bikes, swimming the afternoon away in the lakes, and taking hikes that lead to even more beautiful views and vistas.  I know, I am sounding a little sappy but see what all the fresh air does to the soul?

Getting Back in Touch With Reality:

I have had a ton of trouble getting cell phone reception and plugging in a laptop has been hard too– today has been the first time I have had any contact with civilization in days now.  And what’s the first thing I did? Ok, it was check email, but the second, was BLOG with all of you :)

IN THE NEWS:

I was checking out Philly.com to catch up on news around the Delaware Valley and I am HORRIFIED by this:

“A man with a machine gun aimed at the boy’s head and pulled the trigger.”

This senseless, disgusting shooting happened last night in Camden–  4 year old Brandon Thomson had his life taken away from him with his mother watching.  There are not words….  My heart goes out to this family and I don’t want to tell you what I think of the person who did this.

DHS Investigation:

I have come to know Mayor Nutter fairly well over the last few years, and when I heard the DHS story (you know how angry I was) I instantly thought– I know what his response is going to be, and it was exactly what I thought.  Rage.  Pure simple disgust and a system broken because of some of the people in it.

“If you are not prepared to take the action that needs to be taken, if you cannot keep up and stay on top of things, then you should leave this city government right now,” Nutter said, addressing himself to DHS employees.

“We don’t need you, and we don’t want you.”

LIGHTER NOTE:

I told you in an earlier blog about how I loved this season of “The Next Food Network Star” partly because it’s a blast to watch, but also because two local guys were finalists.  Well, now it looks like they are both about to become big stars.  I remember seeing Adam in Amada… it’s a great tappas restaurant near FOX in Old City, so I visit fairly frequently.  SOOOO proud of these guys.

Sideshow: Phila. foodie gets own show

Make that two Philly-area guys from the recent Next Food Network Star to get their own series.Winner Aaron McCargo Jr. of Camden premiered Big Daddy’s House yesterday. South Philly’s Adam Gertler, one of two runners-up, is in L.A. shooting Will Work for Food. Gertler’s half-hour Food Network show combines his comedy with a sense of adventure and premieres at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 30. It’s not a cooking show, per se. Gertler will show how people in the food business do their jobs. Among them: potato chip inspector, shark feeder and dog-food taste-tester. Gertler, an actor and former waiter at Amada in Old City, coowned The Smoked Joint, a short-lived barbecue restaurant at the Academy House in Center City.

BLOGGERS PICS:

One of our KLTV bloggers sent me these pics of her daughter, Savannah, who just celebrated a birthday.  She is beautiful, sweet, a straight-A student, and a competitive swimmer.  Those of you who know “Cooler” will enjoy these.  Send me your summer pics and I’ll post them!

You really can’t go wrong. You might want to use a bobber so your little guy (who isn’t so little anymore, btw)can see when he has a bite. It makes it a little more interesting.

Watch the spines on the sunnies and bass and perch (dorsal fins) and on the catfish(pectoral fins).

If ya don’t do well now, wait til evening.

I’m in the middle of a 14 hr. day. (I feel like you, KL.)

Have fun, don’t catch ‘em all and tell the fish I said hello.

Bob -

My clairvoyant powers are currently beset by ionospheric interference.

If I were forced to venture an opinion, based on the photos CURRENTLY posted, I would have to say…..

A dogfish.

But, if I had to go with my gut, without any visual clues, I would say a sunfish.(Which are absolutely delicious, in case you didn’t know. The meat has a sweet taste. Try it sometime!)

Ok. But KL works with a guy named Mace, and he has “the mouth of a longshoreman” and he talks like Marlon Brando.

He’s some kind of a Big Cheese.

But, he’s never blogged on here.

But, then again, maybe he has, and his comments ALL got zapped by the commentnazi.

You never know what goes on “behind the scenes”.

Except at the end of The Wizard of Oz.

So, if you can keep the cussing down to a minimum, and refrain from yelling STELLA !, we’ll know it’s you.

31

JT 08.05.08 at 9:08 pm

One year, 3 of my buddies and I went to Maine for a week of fishing.
In September.
It was FREEZING ! We had a couple of nice days, one day we fished in a mini blizzard.
We stayed in these cabins that were just 2×4 studs with boards nailed across the outside.
On the inside, it was just the studs, with the inside of the outside boards showing.
Meals were served in a communal dining hall.
The cabin had a small woodstove for heat, but if you loaded it up at bedtime, the fire wouldn’t last the night; you had to keep putting wood in it.
One night, after supper, I was lying in bed reading. There was a window next to my bed, just where my waist was.
The wind was blowing pretty good outside and the curtains on the inside of the window were just about horizontal.

And the window was CLOSED !
I just busted out laughing.

32

JT 08.05.08 at 9:21 pm

I fished in Canada on a remote lake. There were four “camps” on the lake.
The “Camps” all had a building which was the bunkhouse, a “dining room” which basically was a picnic table, and a kitchen, which had a propane stove, a kerosene refrigerator (I had never seen one before) and a sink with a manual pump which pumped water from the lake.

And we had outhouses. We bathed in the lake.

It was a spring-fed lake.

In Canada.

In May. (Dear God in heaven, that water was COLD !)

33

JT 08.05.08 at 9:31 pm

The guide cooked our meals. It was good, rich food, and there was plenty of it. The guide was French Canadian. There was soup with every lunch and dinner

And plenty of Canadian beer.

The combination of the rich food and canadian beer caused us to “pass a lot of gas”.

Heck, when you’re out on the lake with only one companion in the boat with you, it’s no big deal.
At night, in the dining room, while drinking and playing cards, it was a different story.

Worse yet, was in the confines of the bunkroom.

With the heat from the woodstove.

34

JT 08.05.08 at 9:40 pm

One morning, I woke up first.

And I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

I went outside, smoked a cig and ya know, whatever.

I came back inside, and WHOA !

PEEEEE YOOOOO!

It smelled WORSE than the OUTHOUSE in there !

And I think it ALWAYS smelled like that, but I didn’t NOTICE it, cause I had been BREATHIN’ THAT air ALL NIGHT !

HOOOOOO WEEEEEEE !

35

JT 08.05.08 at 9:41 pm

I think I may have sustained BRAIN DAMAGE during that trip.

Kinda hard to tell in that pic, but, it’s not a sunfish.

Not a whale, either.

It’s not a barracuda.

Hmmm…..it doesn’t look like a rock bass…..

I gotta go back to work.

I’ll have to ponder this further.

Better yet, KL, can you buy a BETTER picture ?

Looks like I am missing all the fun on the blog. We just got back from a family sailing trip. The weather was beautiful thankfully and we had a great time. BTW KL, I was also shocked and horrified by that shooting in Camden. As a mom I cannot imagine what that mother went through. Happier thoughts: my daughter turns 2 tomorrow and we are having a big ol’ family get together so I gotta run and get cooking. Making my famous macaroni salad. I promise to make it for the KLTV BBQ that we must have one of these weekends LOL

JT 08.06.08 at 7:30 pm

I just scrolled up from here to peer at Van’s fish picture in an effort to identify it.

Then I scrolled up further only to find Kl and Van in a meadow.

It was almost as if they were watching me.

Nice hat, KL.

62

JT 08.06.08 at 8:10 pm

My buddy’s brother built a hunting camp in the Adirondacks.

To get there, we had to cross a lake (in a boat, of course) and hike 5 miles into the woods. (Although, nowadays, they skip the lake and drive atv’s to it).

Over the course of a summer, he and a friend of his carried the materials and tools along this route to build a cabin. (and later, an outhouse).

When I got there, I noticed there was a wood-burning stove in the cabin.
So I asked him “Ok, how the heck did you get this here” ?

I was already impressed with their cabin, and the effort they put in to get the materials and the tools to the jobsite. It was nothing fancy, but it did what it was supposed to do, and I’m not sure I’m conveying here what they actually accomplished and what it took to get the job done.

So, anyway, his friend tack welded a wheel and 2 handles to the woodstove and they wheeled it through the woods like a wheelbarrow. When they got it to the cabin, they chiseled off the wheel and the handles.
When they got it to the lakeshore, one guy wheeled it so far, they switched, and the other guy wheeled it so far, and they left it in the woods until the next trip through. And they did it again. And again…etc.

I think about that from time to time, and whenever I think about it, I can only smile.

That was a pretty ingenious idea.

63

mace 08.06.08 at 8:34 pm

Late day. Band practice. Hello lovely people! Hope all is well. Great vacation pictures KL.! Way to go! Exellent break from Lights, camera, action! Oh, and when a young boy catches his first fish, look out! Might as well reserve that vacation spot every year. Way to go Van!

65

mace 08.06.08 at 8:39 pm

66

JT 08.06.08 at 8:40 pm

So, anyways, one time, 5 or 6 of us were in this camp for a number of days, and it was unseasonably warm for that time of year.

One of our party decided it was time for an “apple bath”.

What this was , was, he sliced an apple in half and proceeded to rub his smelly armpits and other body parts with the apple.

I’m watchin’ this, and all I could think was…..

“Oh my God, that poor apple” !

You can bet I didn’t eat any apples for the rest of THAT trip.

67

JT 08.06.08 at 8:41 pm

75

mace 08.06.08 at 9:36 pm

KL, the worms I use are nightcrawlers. They are big and fat! Stick them on the hook and leave some to dangle so the fish can see the movement. They also have GREEN night crawlers also, the fish will spot these night or day. They are neon in color and work great! And careful with those hooks!

Hey KL,
Outstanding photos, thanks for sharing. Do we now have peace in our time because Brett Favre will play this year? I am “so done with” Favre 24/7.

HP 08.07.08 at 7:21 am

where exactly are you? upstate ny?

80

Kerri-Lee 08.07.08 at 8:25 am

And I think I will do exactly that– book a trip here every year to commemorate the spot Van caught his first fish. Wanna know a secret? (JT now you’ll be convinced I’m roughing it) I’m not entirely positive (looking back) that I have showered everyday this week… SHOCKING! Who says you can’t take the news anchor out of the city… LOL

81

bobm 08.07.08 at 8:36 am

im sick of hearing about Brett also! cant wait until the stories are few and “Favre” between!

Hey KL! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you’re having a blast. Sometimes “vacations” feel like more work than actual work, right? From the sounds of it, you’re not on one of THOSE vacations. So kick back, relax and ENJOY!

How’s everyone been? JT! Jack (Darlin)! Crazy! Deck! I know - it’s been a while!!! I sure do miss you guys and “As KL’s Blog Turns”. Remember that!? Ahhh….the good old days!

DARLIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am soooooooooo sorry I missed you on here. A great pic of Savanah on her special day hope she had a blast - and you did as well.

Dont be a stranger on here ;)

This weekend, other that riding on the back of a Harley and relaxing, I am heading to Corvette for Kids on Sunday - at Washington Township Elemenatry School. This marks the 23rd year of this event which assists the famiies of children with disabilites and life-threatening ilnesses.
Great cars - great auction items - a great cause! check it out . . . .

JT, wouldnt an apple bath attract MORE bugs to you?

It was November, in the Adirondack Mts, in upstate N.Y.

It was unseasonably warm, but not to the point of a lot of bug activity.

He wasn’t doing it to repel bugs; he was attempting to “take the worry out of being close”.

103

Rich 08.09.08 at 6:32 pm

JT, enjoy the weekend! Things don’t look good in the Bronx…looks like its gonna be a long weekend in Anaheim and Tampa is pulling away. There’s still time, but not a lot.

Have I got JUST the place for you !

Secaucus, N.J. !

You can see, smell, feel, taste and HEAR what you are breathing.

JT 08.09.08 at 6:41 pm

Hiya Rich !

Yeah if Girardi can pull a rabbit out of his hat, he’d better not wait much longer.

You gotta give Scosia(I don’t think I spelled it right) and the Angels a lot of credit.

Do you believe Tampa ?

Neither do I.

107

JT 08.09.08 at 6:43 pm

And, I’m GONNA enjoy tomorrow.

I’m fishing in a tournament (although, I ain’t doin’ so hot in these tournaments).

Maybe some of Van’s luck will rub off on me.

Yes.

And to herald her return, the heavens will reward us with the Perseid Meteor Showers.

Beginning at 9 PM, look to the Eastern skies.

At 2AM, the moon will set and viewing will be easier.

See David Aldrich’s blog on myfoxphilly for more accurate details.

No luck with the rod and reel today! My son caught a catfish but that was it. Upset over the loss of comedian Bernie Mac. He was an incredible talent. K.L.party over, your fans await your return! Hope you enjoyed yourself fully! I’m sure Van did. Oh and J.T., I’m a few thousand short, does it HAVE to be a million?
