Remembering Others During Times of Pain….

by Kerri-Lee on June 24, 2008 · 19 comments

This blog is going to take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.  This is a picture of one of my childhood friends, Nicole, who is going through the toughest thing any parent could possible face– her son, sweet Ryder, has been diagnosed with brain cancer, and given a 30 percent chance of survival.  Her story, and how you can help is below….

But first:

Nice job KLTV visitors!  See, I know by the thousands of hits this site tracks that you are coming here, but it’s so much more exciting when you leave evidence of your visit, by commenting.  I want to hear your opinions, what you are talking about, and best of all, I really truly enjoy seeing your names and what you have going on in your lives.  It makes my day.  So keep it up and I will try to give you fun topics that inspire your conversation.  Well, it’s not always going to be fun because news isn’t always pretty, but it will always be different, that I can guarantee you.

Quick Housekeeping Note:

I have an event at Love Park tomorrow sponsored by www.wjjz.com , which I will post pictures of, or you can catch coverage on the 5pm news.  Or come on out and join us!  I’ll be there from 1pm-2.

From my Facebook Page:

Ok, here goes.

This falls under the category of– “If you think your life is difficult, remember there is always someone suffering more pain than you…”

This is an article about one of my closest friends growing up, beautiful Nicole.

n566511609_851691_3221.jpgn566511609_838552_5591.jpg

Her 4-year-old son has just been diagnosed with brain cancer, and little Ryder has been given a 30 percent chance of survival, though Nicole says, “Lance Armstrong was given a 5 percent chance, and look at him.”   This is really upsetting me, in a huge way, even though I have never met little Ryder and haven’t seen Nicole in several years since she and her husband live on the westcoast of Canada (Vancouver area) and I live in Philadelphia.

It doesn’t matter, friendship knows no boundaries, and the bond Nicole and I created when geography and borders did not interfere, will stay with me forever.  My heart is with this family in great pain, and if I could give them all a hug and offer any words of encouragement that would make this better, I would do it in a heartbeat.

n566511609_802604_3894.jpg

This is their mantra, they say it everyday and ask that everybody who knows Ryder, cares about him, and visits him, say it–

“Every Day In Every Way, Ryder IS Getting Better And Better”  Here is a link to a blog about his struggle for life.

Please pray for this little boy… and remember their pain if you have road rage today, or if you are frustrated at work, or if you go out for dinner and get bad service.  Life may seem tough, and for many it is, but remember, you are not alone, we all have our private burdens to bear.  My heart goes out to those of you struggling with your own pain.

Weird Story of the Day

Alright, let’s lighten the mood again with something interesting.

So, I guess there is no new found tribe after all…

The Not-So-Lost Tribe

Even in an age when cynical sleuths can hyper-analyze stories for truth and accuracy, the occasional hoax still slips through the cracks. Such was the case with a so-called “lost Amazon tribe.”

A few months ago, mainstream news outlets (including, ahem, Yahoo!) reported that a photographer had found a lost tribe of warriors near the Brazilian-Peruvian border. Photos of the tribe backed up his claim.

As it turns out, the story is only half true. The men in the photo are members of a tribe, but it certainly ain’t “lost.” In fact, as the photographer, José Carlos Meirelles, recently explained, authorities have known about this particular tribe since 1910. The photographer and the agency that released the pictures wanted to make it seem like they were members of a lost tribe in order to call attention to the dangers the logging industry may have on the group.

The photographer recently came clean, and news outlets, perhaps embarrassed at having been taken for a ride, have been slow to pick up the story. Now, the word is starting to spread and articles in the Buzz are picking up steam. Expect a lot more brutal truth in the coming days.

KL you know I tend to stick to the lighter side of things when I comment on here HOWEVER my thoughts and prayers go out to Ryder and to your friend Nicole.

A child should be allowed to live their lives carefree and without pain or suffering in my opinion

I hope every parent makes sure that today no matter what item their kids didnt put away, or “bugged” them about something takes the time to stop and hold em and remind them they are loved and be thankful for what they have.

Kerri Weekes– welcome! (and a special hi to my regulars too, thanks for your comments, I’ll make sure Nicole sees them) Blogging is fun, it’s a way to connect to people you likely will never meet, but you can form a bond with them, thanks to technology. You can discuss things openly and honestly, and it’s a great outlet when you have a couple minutes of downtime, and you want to check in with your “community” of online friends. Thanks for visiting, come back whenever you like, and I DO like your name… you will too!! Kerri-Lee

Nicole, I will be thinking and praying for little Ryder and your family.

You know, life itself is a miracle that most of us forget about on a daily basis. This is why it never hurts to “be a superhero” in your daily actions and thoughts. This kind of goes along with my “This I Believe” article I submitted to NPR.org recently.

Here is the link if you want to read it. It would be so cool if it got on the air or even on the website archives:

Also, Kerri about to be Lee — blogging is a creative outlet for me, that’s why I love doing it. It’s really fun when people get into what you’re doing and comment and give feedback and it’s just a way to learn about all sorts of things.
Personally, I do not enjoy blogs that are more like “personal diaries,” it seems to0 abstract.

I love seeing all the support on this page for a stranger in another country. It makes me believe in humanity again

sending my thoughts and positive energy to our beautiful northern neighbors - and extra hugs to Ryder . . .

Wow, I’ll keep good thoughts for Ryder. KL, please keep us posted! I’ve been very fortunate to have two healthy kids. A few bumps along the way, but nothing like that. It does make you appreciate each day and makes us realize we just don’t know what’s coming the next day. Ryder, keep on fighting!

Kerri-Lee 06.24.08 at 8:52 pm

You said it Rich, “Ryder keep on fighting!” I posted a link to this site on Nicole’s facebook page, so she can click on it and read all of your comments. Thank you all for caring so much… thank you… KL

I first want to send my best wishes and hopes to Ryder & Nicole . I am a friend of Kerri-Lee and I do know first hand the anguish a family goes through during a traumatic time like now . I represent a group called The St.Baldricks Foundation and its mission is to find a cure for Childrens Cancer . It has raised over $50 million in the last 8 years to fund research grants in hospitals all over the world . People raise money by organising events where people get sponsored for shaving their heads . Please go to http://www.stbaldricks.org for more information .

Simon– (Simon Hewson is Paul Hewson AKA Bono’s cousin) Welcome, and thanks for visiting, and I am excited about the St. Baldrick’s event, please let me know how I can help. Thanks for being such a great friend… KL
